Mega Rayquaza: How to Get It, and Why You Want More Than One Meteorite
To Mega Evolve Rayquaza you need a Meteorite to teach it Dragon Ascent, then 400 Mega Rayquaza Energy. Meteorites come from timed research during Mega Rayquaza events, with a very small chance from beating Mega Rayquaza in raids. Get as many as you can: each Rayquaza has its own Mega cooldown, so several Mega-ready Rayquaza let you rotate them.

What you need for Mega Rayquaza
Mega Rayquaza works differently to other Megas:
- A Meteorite teaches your Rayquaza its special move, Dragon Ascent. Without it, Rayquaza can’t Mega Evolve.
- 400 Mega Rayquaza Energy to Mega Evolve it. That’s more than most Megas, and it drops in smaller amounts from raids, so expect to do several Mega Rayquaza raids for one evolution.
Events have sometimes made this easier. During Ozone Ascent, the free timed research included 400 Mega Rayquaza Energy, enough for a free Mega Evolution if you claimed it before the event ended.
How to get a Meteorite
- Free timed research during Mega Rayquaza events usually includes one.
- Paid timed research usually includes another.
- Beating Mega Rayquaza in raids has a very small chance of dropping one.
Timed research expires, so finish it and claim your rewards before the deadline. No Meteorite means no Mega Rayquaza.
Why you want more than one Meteorite
You can only have one Mega active at a time, so why collect more Meteorites than you need for one Rayquaza?
Because the Mega Evolution cooldown applies to each individual Pokémon, not to Rayquaza as a species. Once a Mega reaches a higher Mega Level, re-evolving it gets cheaper and eventually free after its cooldown. At Mega Level 3, you can Mega Evolve it again every three days without spending any energy.
So with three Rayquaza that all know Dragon Ascent and are levelled up, you can Mega Evolve a different one each day while the others cool down. That’s a free Mega Rayquaza whenever you need one.
Matt's takeThree Rayquaza, three Meteorites, that's the goal. If you only have one Meteorite, put it on your best Rayquaza and pour your Mega Energy into it until its cooldown drops.
Mega Rayquaza raids
When Mega Rayquaza shows up in raids, you catch a regular Rayquaza. Its hundo is 2191 CP, or 2739 weather boosted in Windy weather.
Mega Rayquaza is Dragon and Flying type, so it takes double damage from Ice, plus super effective damage from Dragon, Fairy and Rock. The top counters on Pokémon GO Hub’s Mega Rayquaza counters list:
- White Kyurem (Ice Fang and Ice Burn)
- Mega Mewtwo Y (Psycho Cut and Ice Beam)
- Black Kyurem (Dragon Tail and Freeze Shock)
- Mega Mewtwo X (Psycho Cut and Ice Beam)
- Shadow Mamoswine (Powder Snow and Avalanche)
- Mega Rayquaza itself (Dragon Tail and Breaking Swipe*)
- Eternatus (Dragon Tail and Dynamax Cannon*)
- Shadow Aurorus (Frost Breath and Weather Ball)
- Mega Gardevoir (Charm and Triple Axel)
- Mega Garchomp (Dragon Tail and Breaking Swipe)
No legendaries? Anything with Ice moves is your best bet, with Dragon, Fairy or Rock moves as a backup.
