December Community Day 2024 Recap: My Picks for the Two-Day Weekend

December Community Day is one of the best events of the year: every Pokémon that featured in a Community Day that year comes back for a two-day mashup. In 2024 it ran on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 December, 2pm to 5pm each day.

What was on

• The year’s Community Day Pokémon appearing in huge numbers, with boosted shiny odds
• 2x XP, 2x Stardust and 2x Candy
• Exclusive moves for Pokémon evolved between 9am and 9pm on 21 and 22 December

My picks

If you wanted shinies, the answer was simple: catch everything. If you wanted raid attackers, here’s what I focused on:

• Saturday: Litten, evolved into Incineroar for the legacy move Blast Burn*, then Rowlet, evolved into Decidueye for Frenzy Plant*.
• Sunday: Popplio, evolved into Primarina for Hydro Cannon*.
• The last 10 minutes of every hour: four really useful Pokémon spawned, Porygon, Cyndaquil, Bagon and Beldum. If you couldn’t play the full three hours, these were the windows to prioritise.

As always, a Star Piece plus Pinap Berries doubled the double Candy, for four times as much Candy.

Matt's takeThere isn't really a wrong way to play December Community Day, but if you can't play all three hours, prioritise the last 10 minutes of every hour.

How my weekend went

I spent both days at Southbank in Brisbane and walked around 9km each day. Across the two days I caught 636 Pokémon, 33 were shiny (around 1 in 20), one was a hundo and 22 had the special background.
